Angel of the north
The Angel of the north is a steel sculpture shaped like an angel, created by British sculptor Antony Gormley. The reason behind the angel is not only to remind people of the mine workers who worked beneath the surface, but also to give an impression of the humankind evolving from the industrial age to information age. The angel is also a point to focus our hope and fear on.
Many people ask the same question:
“Why an angel?”
Antony then answers:
“Because no-one has ever seen one and we need to keep imagining them.”
The imagination of Antony created an angel, 20 meters and with wings 54 meters wide, with a slight forward angle to create a “sense of embrace”. It took Antony and a team of engineers four years to finish the angel.
