Medial ligaments and patellar tracking during knee flexion
Patella stability is in part assured by the medial patella retinaculum. It is composed of the Medial Patello-Femoral (MPFL), -Meniscal (MPML) and -Tibial (MPTL) ligaments. They originate respectively from the medial condyle, meniscus and tibia, and insert on the medial border of the patella.
In conclusion, the contribution of each ligament at specific knee angles should be accounted for during surgical reconstructions of the medial retinaculum to optimise passive biomechanical patella tracking.
